Tummy Touch Music Group @ SXSW 2010…
30 Mar 2010, 5:25 am
SO as a newbie SXSW can be quite a daunting experience. If one can imagine Camden High Street on a Saturday but with all the building stretched upwards by a factor of 100 and outwards in a six mile radius, then fill every possible space with bands, amps, guitars, BBQ sauce and Wayfarers then you’re almost there. Plus over the 5 days of SXSW everyone in Austin looks like they are in a band. Which they probably are. But once one comes to terms with the sheer scale of this showcase- turned- festival it really does offer the most incredible variety of musical experiences, from buskers in the street through all the hype bands at branded parties for the likes of Vice and Pitchfork to the likes of Lady Gaga as the secret guest at Perez Hilton’s glitzy bash. Not to mention the likes of Muse, Hole and Motorhead playing at various junctures and rumors of everyone from Kings Of Leon to the Big Bopper performing somewhere you haven’t heard of . However what is of interest to the vast majority of vsitors to the Lone Star State’s quirky and magnificent capital is the new bands on offer and there were quite a few of them.
Arriving on Wednesday night we slipped into the serene surroundings of the Red House Pizza joint wherein frat boy hardcore duo Best Fwends performed a lively set of thrash pop with humorous robot- voiced interludes at the Moshi Moshi showcase. After that we ensconsed ourselves at Fader Fort(where we were DJ’ing for Tim’s radio show on East Village Radio later that afternoon) with one of SXSW’s most hotly- tipped acts Local Natives. Unfortunately the sound at the Fort was pretty shabby on the Thursday and, rather like their recordings, did not do justice to the band’s technicolor melodies. That said Chew Lips’ electro pop better suited the system’s dynamics and they pulled off one a great show with frontwoman Tigs proving to be an excellent focal point for the group. With another EVR show on Saturday we spent quite a bit of time at he Fort and enjoyed great shows from Dum Dum Girls, Washed Out, Sleigh Bells and The Morning Banders along the way as well as a superior DJ set from Sunday Best’s Lemonade. Elsewhere we were delighted variously by: Toro Y Moi, Vadoinmessico, Givers, YACHT, Woods, Garotas Suecas, Free Energy, Holy Fuck(surprisingly), Major Lazer(also quite surprisingly), Salem, Megaphonic Thrift and the lovely Slarrafenland. Not entirely floating the collective boat were: JJ, Bomba Estero, Chico Man(it was most certainly not “Chico Time”, UK readers), Memory Tapes(sadly) and also all those DJ’s playing Diplo- style bassline house on a sunny afternoon when there would have been many more appropriate things to choose.
So in summation; SXSW is the best, most exhausting, varied and accommodating place in the World. Just three tips; don’t get wasted on the first night, don’t be afraid to miss anything and beware of the Austin Slutzzz.
